Hurricane season has come to the Atlantic once again.  NOAA considers June 1st through November 30th of this year to be Hurricane Season.

Generally, to prepare for Hurricane Season folks in coastal areas; it is a good idea to review CDC recommendations. https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/hurricanes/before.html

While the CDC glosses over food and water supplies as part of their preparedness plan, this author felt more details should be provided for wineable foresters. *

So you are stockpiling some H-E-B Prime filet, in the freezer, as an inflation hedge and a storm is coming, what to do?  Well, of course, you had best have some pastry shell and mushrooms handy as well.  https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/tyler-florence/the-ultimate-beef-wellington-recipe2-1952280

You also might ensure that you have a back up generator that can power your freezer with an ample amount of fuel.  Propane or natural gas generators use a more stable energy form than gasoline.  Past Hurricanes have led to extended power losses in the Kingwood area; so don’t underestimate how long it could take to restore power.

You may also want to consider enough power to run your wine fridge as well.  While normally we wouldn’t pare a white wine with the above Wellington, when the AC is out in summer a refreshing chilled white is just the thing.

An acidic Sauvignon Blanc will go surprisingly well with a steak in summer.

Don’t forget that to continue to prepare high end meals during a power outage; you need to consider cooking capabilities.  Many electric ranges will not function.  An outdoor grill with a burner can be just the thing to ensure that you can prepare food during power outages.  I really like my natural gas double burner grill with a rotisserie.

We keep ample supplies of green coffee beans which we roast on the rotisserie.  As markets may be over run, leading up to a Hurricane, it is a good idea to keep food stock in the most stable form on hand.  Green coffee beans may be stored indefinitely.  While roasted coffee should not be ground until just before use and used within a week of roasting for ideal results.

While hopefully the winds will push the hurricanes out to sea this summer.  It is a good idea to prepare for the possibility.  Hurricanes don’t have to mean the absence of fantastic food and wine!
